Care & Patina
Monvoy pieces are made to be used. Not preserved, not kept in a drawer — used, carried, handled, and allowed to become something that is distinctly yours over time.
That process has a name: patina. It is what happens when good leather meets a life being lived.
What Patina Is
Patina is the gradual change in a leather surface that comes from use, light, and the natural oils of your hands. It is not wear. It is not damage. It is the leather responding to its environment and developing a depth of colour and character that no factory finish can replicate.
A Monvoy piece that has been carried for two years should look better than it did on the day it arrived. That is the intention, and it is the reason we choose leathers that develop rather than leathers that simply endure.
Day to Day
Most Monvoy pieces require very little intervention. Keep them away from prolonged direct sunlight and allow wet leather to dry naturally, away from direct heat. Do not use a hairdryer or place a piece on a radiator — heat dries leather quickly and unevenly, which can cause cracking at the edges.
If your piece gets wet, blot it gently with a clean cloth and leave it to dry at room temperature. A little water will not harm good leather.
Conditioning
Over time, leather benefits from occasional conditioning — once or twice a year is sufficient for most pieces. A small amount of a good quality, colourless leather conditioner applied with a soft cloth will replenish the natural oils and keep the leather supple.
Avoid silicone-based products, which sit on the surface rather than nourishing the leather. Avoid anything with petroleum distillates. When in doubt, less is more.
Deerskin Linings
All Monvoy interiors are lined in deerskin — one of the softest, most tactile leathers available. Deerskin requires no maintenance. Simply keep it clean and dry. If the lining becomes soiled, wipe gently with a barely damp cloth and allow to air dry.
Storage
If you are storing a Monvoy piece for any length of time, keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct light. A breathable dust bag is ideal — avoid plastic, which traps moisture. Stuff structured pieces lightly with acid-free tissue to help them hold their shape.
A Note on Marks and Scratches
Minor surface marks on smooth leathers can often be buffed out gently with a soft cloth. Do not panic — leather is more resilient than it looks, and small marks tend to blend into the patina over time rather than becoming more visible.
